On 16 November 2016, drinks were held at Slate Bar in the legal precinct.  The event was well attended by lawyers and newly arrived French qualified lawyers.  It was an enjoyable and relaxed evening.   Guests were able to chat in French and English and enjoy a glass of wine in pleasant company.

Australian and European Refugee Laws Seminar

On 4 October 2016, FALS held a seminar on the topic of Australian and European Refugee Laws.  The event was co-organised and sponsored by Deakin University.  Julian Burnside AO QCbarrister and human rights and refugee advocate, and Dr Maria O Sullivan,a Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, Monash University and an Associate in the Castan Center for Human Rights Law, gave two very interesting presentations on the rights of asylum seekers in Australia and Europe, and the current challenges faced by both jurisdictions.

The seminar was followed by drinks and canapes.

Over 80 people attended including the French Honorary Consul, Ms Myriam Boisbouvier-Wylie.

We will soon post a link to the video of the event.

Bastille Day Festival

On 16th and 17th July 2016 the French Australian Lawyers Society participated in the Bastille Day Festival at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne. Francophiles and Australians enjoyed a program of free, accessible and family oriented activities to celebrate the French National day and experience french language, food and culture.

The day was an opportunity to get a taste of all things French in Melbourne, with theatre, movies, children’s activities and, of course, a large selection of French food and wine!  There were many excellent seminars given on the day also, a highlight was the seminar on buying property in France given by Mr Michael Bula, Solicitor, Notary and member of the Society.  Another popular seminar was on Immigration Law given by Ms Jasmine Ruffilli of Sullivan and Ruffilli and Mr Pierre Hammond, French Translator who had also participated in our last seminar in June at the Trust Bar.

The Festival was well received and thoroughly appreciated by the public.  We take this opportunity to thank our members for attending the event and representing the Society.  A minute’s silence was held to commemorate the victims of the Nice attack on the night of the 14 July.

Immigration Law Seminar

On 23 June 2016 in Melbourne, FALS and FACCI hosted an Immigration Law Seminar presented by Jackson Taylor and James Hammond from Hammond Taylor Migration Lawyers.

Hammond Taylor offers a full suite of services tailored to meet business’ immigration needs such as compliance and risk management, managing sponsorship obligations, audit, liaison with the Department of Immigration, and Labour Agreements.

The seminar covered a broad range of migration issues with a particular focus on temporary work (skilled) visas (subclass 457). The event was well attended and participants enjoyed drinks, food  and networking with the diverse audience after the presentation.
